Dust
My town is nothing but
Dead slugs and liquor
High desert quiet
Here is where they speak
Here the mountains stalk and whisper
Liquor and dead slugs
The blood hills, they wheeze
I can smell their breath from here
High desert dry so
Mountain skin flakes
Down the scorching slopes and
Through the empty here
High desert nothing but
Knifewinds and ghosts
There is no future for me here
Naught but dust and bugs

jungle
my new apartment is beside the freeway
there’s a wingstop outside my window
and school is down the street
the drone of traffic fills my room
and all i can hear are cars
and the washing machine
this is better than home because
there is much more, i think
i should go outside
if i listen closely then
maybe the concrete and metal will
tell me what i need to hear
but when the laundry is done
and the traffic is gone
all i can hear is
my heart that beats too fast
when i think about today
and who i want to be tomorrow

Advil
I can’t remember what I did yesterday
Did I go to class?
No, we went to the beach
Or was that last week?
Where did you put my glasses?
I should check my calendar
That I haven’t touched since May
Quick, choose a number
Or an animal, actually
Let’s get a coffee
Scratch that
Tell me what’s on your mind
I have plans that day
Shush, I’m trying to hear the TV
Did you take out the trash?
I need to eat dinner but
I can’t get out of bed
Thanks for asking

heavy
think about it
that time when
so it ended up
do you remember that?
think about it
if you could
and none of it
would you?
you’re thinking about it
about how much
and who you
are you okay?
stop thinking about it
if they know that
but you can’t
what’s the point?

Ball
It’s apparent, no doubt
A dancer, he is
What rhythm and bounce, is he
A musician or a writer?
He writes in fours because
It lands right and proper
It sits up straight
And sleeps before midnight
He poses not himself
His legs pen across the floor
Up and twist, turns and
Through the ballroom, point
So four it was and went
One, two, step and go
Promenade, and then he got
A hold of himself
